Can cannabinoid oils be used to treat seizures for people with epilepsy?

There has been much debate lately about the use of cannabinoid oils and their use in controlling seizures. Various studies have documented how effective it could be as a treatment for seizures and there is growing interest in its uses for controlling seizures for people with epilepsy. 

What are cannabinoid oils?

Medical cannabinoid oils are made using the Cannabidiol (CBD) part of the marijuana plant. Although there are some strains that contain psychoactive part of the plant, otherwise known as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the part of the plant that causes the sensation of feeling euphoric. The latter remains illegal in the UK, although are used regularly as a treatment in parts of the US. Cannabinoid oils are a thick, sticky, resinous substance that can be taken orally.  

CBD has recently been reclassified by the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a medicine. Not to be confused with marijuana, which remains a Class B drug. (Source: Epilepsy Action)

Do cannabinoid oils actually work?

There’s a growing argument that’s backed up by a number of medical studies that shows cannabinoid oils may be helpful in controlling seizures. One such study in the US carried out by Dr Orrin Devinsky (Director of the New York University Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center) found that when trialled on 214 people it reduced seizures by up to 54%. The same study also confirmed that the drug was also safe to use. (Source: Epilepsy Action)

As previously mentioned, this post is not intended to provide a definitive answer, but to highlight what appears to be a promising area of study that may have a positive impact in the future.

Side Effects

Like most medications, there are some reported side effects that have arisen in studies that have to be taken into account. Including:

  • Sleepiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased appetite

Can I be prescribed cannabinoid oils?

At present, it’s not possible to be prescribed cannabinoid oils. However, the Home Office is currently reviewing the case of a 6 year old boy from Warwickshire for a trial who has a rare form of epilepsy, although “no decision has been made. Read more in this article from the BBC.
